Chris Patterson was raised in Oxnard, California with family roots in Mississippi. Often as a child the family would take road trips to Mississippi for the summer. This is when he first experienced the delicious Southern flavors, CJ’s Barbecue is famous for. When he was young, Chris would make breakfast for his family of six every weekend, developing his palate with his unique creations. Chris continued his love for cooking every weekend but his first love was basketball. During high school he honed his skills on the court at Santa Clara High School and his talent was recognized throughout Southern California as a true star.

Chris decided to enroll in cosmetology school after traveling down to Mississippi and New Orleans with his mother, who is an incredible & talented hair stylist herself. Chris himself eventually became a licensed hairstylist & barber following high school. Soon after graduating cosmetology school, Chris opened several profitable shops in Oxnard, Ventura & Santa Barbra. Chris would often cook at home and bring leftovers for lunch. The food was such a sensation, that patrons requested he sell plates and he did. He cooked Thursdays and sold plates on Fridays & Saturdays. His plates became so popular that within a few months he had to find a commercial kitchen to keep up with the demand. This gave him the idea of opening a restaurant. He started small, renting a spot and time slot from several small restaurants in Oxnard. Starting from the ground up he learned the fundamentals of running a good business and decided to open up his own location. The 1st location was on Oxnard Blvd near Kampai and was originally called Big Daddy’s BBQ. Word of mouth spread with great reviews and this was the beginning of something special.

After some time he decided to change the name to CJ’s in reference to himself Chris and his son Jordan. CJ’s Barbecue is family owned and operated. Strong family values and team work have always been the core of this business. When Chris first opened up CJ’s Barbecue family played a major role: Chris cooked the food, his daughter Anisa worked the cash register and his son Jordan waited.

Throughout the years Cj’s Barbecue has remained strong with regulars, tourist, military and our summer time families. Even the Dallas Cowboys can’t resist the delicious food at CJ’s Barbecue. Since first coming to Oxnard in 1993 for training camp the players have always made CJ’s Barbecue a must have place to visit for lunch or dinner. To date the Oxnard location has been open since 2007, and you can look forward to new locations set to open soon possibly near you!
